For this project I have to state my personal view point on the idea of censorship; I do not support banning reading material. We all have a favorite book and the chances of that book ever being challenged in history is very high. The book I chose for this project is one of my favorite books from middle-school, which I was not aware of it being challenged since I read it at a young age. In America, we have the right to free speech as we all know, which derived from the First Amendment. in addition, we also hold the right to freedom of the press, peaceful protest, and to practice any religion without discrimination or discouragement. In the United States we have been fortunate enough to express our true feelings and not live in fear of our government. The U.S has a democracy instead of a totalitarian government like some countries. I believe that since we live with such freedoms, we should embrace it. Not everything in life embraces magical or perfect circumstances, which is way authors should be in possession of the right to publish their observant to life aspects; they write about truth and life.
Most people or organizations try to ban novels that focus or are related to immoral behaviors. Books teach us life lessons, I learned about the war on drugs and how the love from friends can be more powerful than the love of family in Savages. In contrast, a vast majority of people indulge their minds in words from the Bible, which gives them their perspective on life lessons, relationships, faith, however banning such a book would also fail to be in popular conversation. Some people respect the ideas of others and their view points, but instead of trying to outlaw their opinion, they just argue with them. There are organizations that fight to keep free speech exactly what it is, free. The American Library Association made a list of book challenges reported by citizens; they issued a highlighted list of the most frequently challenged books every year (Kallweit). They also "list dozens of activities concerned citizens can organize at bookstores, libraries and in the press" (Kallweit) to spread awareness in a way of books that have been challenged or are being threatened to be taken off the shelves. Another good organization is the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression; their purpose to protect the ideas contained primary in books. They fight in legal cases involving the First Amendment and organized groups, while providing education to the public addressing the importance of free expression ("About ABFFE"). Organizations like these don't just inform people on the books being challenged, they fight for each book and along side each author.
